A través de la historia, los desastres han provocado pérdidas humanas y han tenido un severo impacto económico, social, médico y psicológico en las sociedades. Lamentablemente, los desastres y los traumas psicosociales que éstos producen no desaparecerán del país, en especial porque no existe una cultura de prevención y no se cuenta con los suficientes recursos económicos y financieros nacionales para hacerle frente a las secuelas materiales y psicológicas. En ese sentido, es importante comprender las razones fundamentales del por qué hay tanta destrucción y pérdida -ya que ello puede ayudar a desarrollar una cultura de prevención-, y cómo y a quienes afecta psicológicamente el desastre -pues este conocimiento posibilita la intervención psicosocial de manera oportuna y efectiva-. Por tanto, en este artículo se abordan los terremotos del 13 de enero y 13 de febrero, sus causas sociales y el impacto psicológico en los sobrevivientes del trauma.
