Si les interpretations historiques de l'administration coloniale britannique tendent a accepter la revendication britannique d'une impartialite religieuse, l'A. tente de montrer que si les Britanniques tenterent de legitimer leur administration par une apparente neutralite envers les differents groupes islamiques du Nigeria, leur implication dans le systeme de l'Indirect Rule les a oblige a soutenir les groupes au pouvoir et a reprimer ceux qui semblaient menacer le status quo, classant notamment les musulmans de la region en bon et mauvais a partir d'un ensemble de criteres discriminants. Examinant la periode jusqu'au debut des annees 1930, l'A. tente notamment de repondre aux questions suivantes : Quel etait le point de vue des administrateurs coloniaux sur l'islam en tant que religion et de quelle maniere cela a influence leur politique ? Quelles etaient les qualites des Masu Sarauta et de la confrerie Qadiriyya que les Britanniques trouverent favorables ? Quels etaient les criteres pour considerer les autres groupes comme menacants et comment furent restreintes leurs activites ? Quelle etait l'influence de la politique coloniale sur les relations entre les Masu Sarauta, la Qadiriyya, et les autres confreries
