L'A. examine les determinants historiques et sociaux qui ont mene aux guerres ethniques entre Hunde, Hutu et Tutsi a Muvunyi-Kibabi dans la zone rurale de Masisi (Zaire oriental). Il centre son analyse sur les luttes pour le controle de la terre et du pouvoir politique, et sur l'analyse des discours locaux, et internes aux differents groupes ethniques. Apres une breve introduction sur la situation sociale et geographique, et sur les relations interethniques dans la region, il decrit la politique coloniale de peuplement et ses consequences pour les conflits ethniques contemporains. Il analyse ensuite l'impact de l'independance du Congo en 1960 sur les revendications territoriales et politiques des differentes ethnies. Finalement, il interprete la guerre ethnopolitique de 1993 comme un episode de la revolution initiee en 1960
