An examination of the origins of the distinctive sociopolitical framework of the Lunda commonwealth, in which government was centered around a chief or king, has determined that it ultimately developed out of a very different social system in which government was collective and exercised by the members of a male association.1 These results have been obtained by the application of a comparative historical semantic method known as Words and Things.2 Before the results can be set out, however, the particular situation to which the method is to be applied and some features of the method itself need to be discussed
