Gerald W. Hartwig died suddenly on 19 October 1980 in Northfield, Minnesota, less than two months after he had resigned as professor of history at Duke University to become vice president and academic dean at St. Olaf College. Hartwig was deeply committed to intercultural education and to teaching about Africa, both in the public schools and at the university level. He had served as director of the Southern Atlantic States Association for Asian and African Studies and as acting director of International Studies at Duke. An active and enthusiastic scholar, Hartwig was a regular contributor to this journal. His published works include: The Art of Survival in East Africa: The Kerebe and Long-Distance Trade, 1800-1895 and numerous articles. He co-edited and was a major contributor to Disease in African History: An Introductory Survey and Case Studies and edited a collection of books for younger readers, The Africa Sketches Series. In recent years his research has focused on problems of African medical history, especially in the Sudan. Many readers of this journal knew Jerry Hartwig as a colleague and a friend; a man of rare kindness, generosity, and integrity
