L'A. examine la genese de l'historiographie de la guerre Maji Maji en Tanzanie a travers trois epoques : dans l'historiographie coloniale allemande puis britannique, dans le recit historique nationaliste et de l'independance ensuite. Il montre comment cette revolte populaire a ete construite en tant que recit etatique. Il met en evidence certains elements de la tradition Maji Maji qui sont contestables, ainsi que d'autres qui n'ont pas trouve leur place dans le recit dominant parce qu'ils s'opposent a l'objectif narratif de la legitimation du pouvoir de l'Etat. Finalement, il met en evidence la maniere dont l'histoire de la Tanzanie a ete manipulee par le recit etatique afin de justifier des politiques defavorables aux gens du commun ou qui ont oblitere leur histoire. L'A. se propose ainsi d'ouvrir de nouvelles recherches sur la rebellion Maji Maji et de reflechir a la maniere dont elles peuvent servir pour les luttes populaires contemporaines en Tanzanie
