Au debut du XX e siecle, les pretres chretiens hortodoxes Tawahdo de Zage (Nord-Ouest de l'Ethiopie) ont developpe un systeme de culture du cafe en employant une main d'oeuvre esclave. Les esclaves venaient de la region Gumuz, a la frontiere soudanaise. La production de cafe connut son apogee dans les trente premieres annees du XX e siecle. L'abolition de l'esclavage fut declaree lors de l'occupation italienne de l'Ethiopie en 1935. L'A. analyse le role economique des planteurs et les relations interethniques parmi les esclaves. Les relations de pouvoir ont ete interpretees par les populations locales et ont servi a la creation de nouveaux mythes qui expliquent les divisions sociales et les roles economiques
