Compte tenu des enjeux sociopolitiques qui caracterisent la region contemporaine de l'Afrique centrale, l'A. se propose de faire le point sur la comprehension historique de la periode precoloniale afin d'en restituer les contextes politiques englobants dans toute leur complexite et d'explorer la complementarite des differents niveaux d'analyse historique. Centrant son analyse sur l'espace qui constitue aujourd'hui le Burundi et le Rwanda, il se propose de jeter les bases pour une revision des stereotypes historiques et de degager les tendances regionales, notamment du point de vue de la construction des structures politiques formelles. Il examine deux processus de formation de l'Etat dans les Hautes-Terres entre la Vallee du Rift occidentale (Lacs Kivu et Tanganyika) a l'ouest, et les rivieres Kagera et Malagarasi a l'est. Il met en evidence la diversite des configurations sociopolitiques, economiques, ecologiques et culturelles locales et la diversite des facteurs qui ont influence l'emergence des deux structures etatiques du Burundi et du Rwanda. Selon l'A., les approches historiques courantes ont souvent neglige les dynamiques sociales internes dans la constitution des identites ethniques, et des differenciations sociales et economiques
