The Southwestern Anthropological Research Group (SARG) consists of more than thirty co‐operating archaeologists devoting at least a part of their research time towards the testing of hypotheses of central interest to the group. The general question the group adopted is: ‘Why do people live where they do?’ The members of SARG hope to help explain the distribution of human settlement by testing hypotheses in a number of regions of the prehistoric Southwestern United States. This article discusses the development of SARG, the research design that the Group evolved, the strategy adopted to implement the research and implications for social scientific approaches in archaeology
