Housing in an industrial landscape

Before the late eighteenth century, the predominant type of workers’ dwelling in West Yorkshire was the single‐storey cottage. This type of dwelling continued to be built throughout the nineteenth century, particularly in association with the extractive industries. In the late eighteenth century, it was more usually superseded by the two‐storeyed cottage, often offering no more accommodation than its single‐storeyed predecessor but saving on land and building materials, particularly when built in long terraces or back‐to‐back. Houses were built by the workers themselves through building clubs, by investors, by speculators, and by employers. Where the builders were philanthropically motivated and were influenced by contemporary opinions on acceptable standards and design, the result could be the model village. Other builders were influenced more by cost, and in hilly areas this could result in the evolution of some characteristically ingenious plans
