Peruvian archaeology, 1946-80

Peruvian archaeology is a rapidly growing, cosmopolitan discipline that has undergone considerable change since the Virú Valley Project in the mid‐1940s. Using a historical perspective; we elucidate evolutionary changes and the broader intellectual and political contexts in which they occurred, placing equal emphasis on the emerging Peruvian tradition and the orientation of archaeologists from abroad who study Peruvian archaeology. The paper concludes with a critical assessment of the current state of the art and practical suggestions for improving communication and unification within and between these research traditions
