What has been interpreted as the clay impression of an early Mesopotamian cylinder seal has been identified among material from nineteenth‐century excavations at the Neolithic site of Tordos in Transylvania (Romania). The cylinder which made the impression might in fact have been a wooden one of Syrian origin dating from the third millennium. The Tordos impression would fit into a picture of contacts between the Near East and the Balkans at the beginning of the third millennium, as suggested by research during the past decade. A possible reason for such contacts might be an early Oriental interest in Transylvanian gold. It is difficult to reconcile this picture of Balkan‐Near Eastern contacts with the Balkan radiocarbon dates
