Lom stave church

The existing largely seventeenth‐century stave church at Lom, in Norway, is described, with an explanation of the circumstances of its rebuilding in 1634 and 1663. Important results were obtained at Lom in 1973 when the floor of the church was excavated. The finds included fragments of parchment and over 2,000 coins, while it proved possible also to obtain a plan of the earliest building on the site, dating probably to the eleventh century. This original church, unlike its medieval successor, was built with posts set in the ground. The posts had rotted and the building had lasted no more than a century, as was the case at other early Norwegian churches with which Lom is compared
