In a somewhat iconoclastic way, this article examines the pros and cons of photogrammetry and the contribution it could make to archaeological recording. Without being highly technical, the author examines the need of archaeology for more controlled and accurate surveying and spatial recording and criticises the lack of professionalism in much practical archaeological field work. In the increasingly technical world of remote sensing, the computer and micro‐processor, if archaeologists do not utilise this available technology to maximise and organise the information recovered during excavation, they will diminish the status of the subject as a science and raise the question as to their fitness to excavate
