Sea mammal hunters of Chukotka, Bering Strait

This paper discusses the results of investigations by the Bering Archeological Expedition (BAE) on the coast of the Chukotka peninsula in 1990–5. We examine the settlement pattern, bone tool manufacture, dwellings and pottery of the Paleo‐Eskimo cultures. The settlement pattern was influenced by geographical conditions between the third and the fourteenth centuries ad, but defensive positions for fighting against external enemies became more important in later times. The investigation of tools made of walrus tusk and deer antler has shown the crucial role of iron cutting implements for the manufacture of toggling harpoons. Ceramic production was based on manual modelling by sticking pieces of clay to a former made of baleen. The analysis of calibrated dates has led to a revision of the existing chronology of Paleo‐Eskimo cultures on the Asian coast of the Bering Strait.
