Industrial archaeology, as an emergent discipline, is discussed. There then follows a description of the initial organization and subsequent progress of the official Northern Ireland survey ‐the first comprehensive full‐time regional survey of industrial archaeology, undertaken between 1962 and 1968. Resulting from this, Dr McCutcheon's The Industrial Archaeology of Northern Ireland (HMSO for the Department of the Environment for Northern Ireland) was published in 1980
