L'histoire recente du Soudan est marquee par la lutte entre differents groupes pour le controle des ressources. Ces groupes peuvent etre identifies comme l'Etat, une confrerie religieuse, un parti politique, une ethnie. Les conflits internes au Soudan prennent plusieurs dimensions: regional entre l'Egypte, la Libye ou l'Iran. A l'interieur du pays, on observe un conflit nord-sud entre le gouvernement de Khartoum et la rebellion organisee (Armee de liberation des peuples du Soudan). Il faut ajouter un conflit interethnique entre Fur et Arabes dans le Darfur, entre Arabes et Nuba au Kordofan, entre Nilotes et non Nilotes dans le sud
