From the summer of 1963 through the summer of 1967 I conducted the fieldwork for a sociological study of a religious movement in Zaire, called the Jamaa. Over the course of 1971 to 1973 I wrote a book-length monograph on the Jamaa, including some observations on my relationship to it, which became my dissertation for the Ph. D. in Sociology at Harvard University. 1) In the intervening years between 1967 and 1973 I made three follow-up visits to various strategic sites in the Jamaa's history and development.
