L'A. montre que l'arrivee de Hastie, envoye special du gouvernement anglais, a Antananarivo en aout 1817, fut mise en scene par le souverain de Merina, Radama I, pour coincider avec le cycle rituel du Fandroana ou bain royal. Ce bain royal survient a un moment de grande tension politique ou Radama est sur le point de briser le pouvoir des conseillers de son pere en passant une alliance avec l'Angleterre et en mettant fin a la traite des esclaves noirs. L'A. montre comment Radama introduit des inversions symboliques dans le processus pour communiquer ses intentions politiques a la cour royale
