The appearance of Moreno 1 s (13) volume on the purpose and scope of sociometry has stimulated an impressive amount of research literature concerned with social relations. As is true of the development of any scientific instrument certain technical and theoretical limitations, to be described briefly below, have been uncovered through this research. These limitations have provided the impetus for several modifications of the original technique [see (10) for a discussion of these modifications] but they, for the most part, have failed to solve the basic problems. It is the purpose of this paper to describe a sodome trie technique which is an attempt to overcome these technical shortcomongs . It is the further purpose of this paper, and the two following papers prepared by Dr. Kuntz and Dr. de Jung, to describe studies which demonstrate some of the uses of the technique
