IN A PREVIOUS article I have maintained that new evidence for the career of Themistokles is to be found in the letters that have come down to us under his name. Attempts had been made to isolate the historical material in these letters but no one as yet had applied this material towards a solution of the many problems surrounding Themistokles' life. It is my contention that, with the help of the epistles, we may draw definite conclusions particularly of a chronological nature, although they tell us other things as well. This paper then is intended to present a more lengthy argument for my position. I shall assume a knowledge of my earlier work; I have already set forth the evidence, along with the chronology and itinerary for Themistokles that I consider to be historical.' Much more work needs to be done on the Letters of Themistokles. I consider my study to be in many ways preliminary, but some initial statement should be made concerning this important material; my conclusions are as follows
