THE AGRINION HOARD, soon to be published in full by the American Numismatic Society, provides us with numismatic evidence for the means by which the defeated Aetolians were to pay the indemnity imposed upon them by Rome for their support of Antiochus III. A preliminary report of this hoard was given by Margaret Thompson in the Numismatic Chronicle for 1962.1 The hoard of 1340 pieces was found at Agrinion in western Aetolia. It contains: 179 fourthand third-century fractional silver pieces 97 triobols of the Aetolian League 151 triobols of Megalopolis 834 triobols of the Achaean League 39 tetradrachms of Athens 1 tetradrachm of Cyme 39 Republican denarii. Two Corinthian issues of the Achaean League are in such good condition that Miss Thompson concludes that the burial date of the hoard cannot be much after 146. It is with the New Style tetradrachms of Athens that we are concerned here. Miss Thompson states that the issues present an almost unbroken sequence of strikings from 190 to 169, along with two later issues.
