THE PURPOSE OF THIS ARTICLE iS to investigate the age-limits for contestants in the boys' events at Olympia. The view which is widely accepted is that boys were aged seventeen to nineteen inclusive,' but the evidence I believe indicates rather that the boys' class could admit competitors as young as twelve, but would exclude those who had attained the age of eighteen. Proponents of the theory that the boys' class comprised athletes aged seventeen, eighteen, and nineteen rely heavily on an inscription from Olympia which refers to the arrangement of the Sebastan festival in Naples
