THIRTY years ago I came across a remarkable parchment codex in the library of a Viennese friend of mine. Upon examination this volume was found to contain, among other things, the text of a letter purporting to have been written by no less a person than Presbyter Johannes or Prester John-to give him his vernacular name, which is probably more familiar to you. It is this curious document which will form the subject of my discourse tonight.' The oldest extant manuscripts of Prester John's Epistola date from the second half of the twelfth century.2 Nor can the letter have come into existence much earlier than the middle of the twelfth century: for it is addressed to Manuel Comnenus, the Byzantine Emperor, who reigned from 1143 to 1180
