Did Ancient Identity Depend on Ethnicity? A Preliminary Probe

To what degree did ancient peoples base their distinctive identities upon ethnicity, i.e., descent, lineage, ancestry, and kinship? This article questions the significance of ethnicity in that sense as a prime marker of group self-consciousness. It argues for a diversity of meanings for ethnic terminology and a complex combination of plural identities in ancient self-perception
