Architectural modifications to some alae (symmetrical spaces lateral to the atrium) provide evidence for built-in cupboards, shelving, and lofts. This paper, based on a survey of Pompeian atrium houses in Regio VI, discusses the form and use of these storage strategies and contributes to the larger discussion of late republican/early imperial Roman domestic space
