senior civil servants did not in antiquity write technical grammar. But he does not consider the obvious alternative that 'chief wine waiter' is a cult institutional title. The first two fragments belong to Aristarchus' Pros Komanon but tell us nothing about Comanus; it would be false to believe that every Homeric reference in these discursive syggrammata implied that the passage had been mentioned by the addressee. This still leaves 18 fragments of this interesting forerunner of Aristarchus, on which D. provides a learned and extensive commentary. It is worth noting that D. accepts that Aristophanes like Zenodotus indulged in conjecture to solve textual problems. The series on Ancient Grammarians has now reached its 7th volume; thanks are due to the authors, and to the editors (Alpers, Kleinlogel and Erbse) for making more fragments available in this useful and authoritative form
