THIS ARTICLE is not intended to be a comprehensive treatment of Propertius 1.18, although it is hoped that two of the three topics to be discussed will illuminate to some extent the poem as a whole. In the first section the function of the poem's mise-en-scene will be examined. The second will be concerned with the interpretation of lines 11-16 and of line 15 in particular (ut tibi sim merito semper furor).
