passages of Eusebius and Lactantius. 1 Early in 1985 I thought that I had found the solution to the problem of these passages when I recognized the possibility that the miracle described by Constantine had resulted in the labarum, but not in a conversion.2 However, it became apparent immediately that the removal of the conversion as an historical event eliminated some difficulties with the evidence only to create others, and it seems to me even now that these may be of sufficient importance to rule out the possibility of a conclusive proof.
