This paper investigates the apparently discordant weather sign of St Elmo's fire in Valerius' Argonautica. Adopting the interpretive model of Seneca's Natural Questions and its integration of "scientific" and "mythological" readings, it argues that Valerius evokes, only to undermine, an idealised vision of Stoic providence that is closely modelled on Seneca and Virgil
