ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN MADE in the past to fix the dramatic date of Plutarch's dialogue, the De Defectu Oraculorum. Pomtow' argued that the only time when Demetrius' voyage could have been undertaken was during Agricola's enterprising governorship of Britain (A.D. 78-84) and therefore suggested that the dramatic date was the Pythia of A.D. 83. Bayet proposed a date twenty years earlier.2 More recent scholars have expressed doubts as to whether the date can be determined within narrow limits at all.3 The purpose of this note is to reassemble and reconsider all the material relevant for establishing, first, the date of composition and, secondly, the dramatic date of the work
