The course and strategy of Pharnakes ii's Pontic and Bosporan campaigns (48-47 b.c.) are reconstructed by contrasting the literary accounts: Cassius Dio 42.45–47 is accurate but short; the Caesarian Bellum Alexandrinum 34–78 is reliable, but omits information not directly relevant to Pontus; Appian (Mithr. 120.590–595) provides additional details, although misrepresenting itinerary and causation due to his narratological design and moralizing purpose
