I am aware that I am taking up an unpopular position in questioning this new orthodoxy, and that my criticisms will be open to the charge that my stance is purely negative-the implication being that there is no point, or one is not justified, in criticizing the use of psychoanalysis unless one has something better to offer in its place. But although I, on the whole, think that a positive view is preferable, this cannot always be the only or the overriding imperative. In any case the debate around ideas should not be seen as negative, and I see this piece as inviting a debate that I hope will be taken up in the pages of Feminist Review and perhaps elsewhere
