This paper attempts a detailed exploration of the complex and problematic nature of negotiating clashing ideological accounts, and how this impacts on every-day interactions with refugees in the community. As the extracts will illustrate, the participants expressed simultaneous contradictory positions and feelings, on the one hand being compassionate and generous towards refugees, while also harbouring suspicion and feeling exploited by them
