Women's Aid refuges must be acknowledged as one of the most notable and innovative forms of voluntary action to be seen in Bntain in recent years. From the setting up of the first refuge in 1971, the number grew until by the end of the decade there were over 200 refuges in Britain (Binney, Harkell and Nixon, 1981; Scottish Women's Aid, 1980). The links between Women's Aid and the Women's Liberation Movement have always been strong. On the one hand, a number of powerful studies have documented the connections between wife abuse and the unequal position of women, both within marriage and in society in general (see especially, Dobash and Dobash, 1980; Evason, 1982; Wilson, 1983). On the other hand, the movement for refuges is clearly a product of the Women's Liberation Movement. For many women, working in a refuge has offered a way of putting feminist ideals, and feminist ways of organizing, into practice. Thus Binney concluded
