The rural population that inhabits the district of El Garzal, in the municipality of Simit, department of Bolvar, Colombia, has suffered for more than a decade from threats of expropriation of its lands by landowners and paramilitaries. Nowadays, this community formed mainly by cocoa farmers and artisanal fishermen is recognized nationally for having resisted the threats peacefully. This paper discusses the strategies of the young people of this region to maintain ties with their hometown while simultaneously creating new mobilities. In the context of this work, the concept of youth is a theoretical reference in a class perspective. This implies observing this part of the population beyond the idea of an age group. Additionally, the term peasant is used assuming a concept of moral order which also transcends the economic perspective. The methodology used is qualitative and the choice of cases corresponds to an intentional non-probabilistic sampling in the El Garzal district and in two other municipalities that receive the young immigrants. Data collection was performed through participant observation and semi-structured interviews. The results obtained show that El Garzal is an unusual case of a community's ties to the land. In the case of these young people, there are several established ties that can be strengthened with support concerning environmental and agro-ecological issues given the regional possibilities. However, threats such as the increase of illicit crops and inefficient policies to promote legitimate agricultural activities to meet generational substitution can cause the gains made by the community to be lost in the next generation
