Diacritic and Distinctive Features in Avestan

The result of this study suggests that the Avestan alphabet is the first known one to systematically distinguish phonemic distinctive features by means of diacritic derivation. So far, the reconstruction of the Avestan sound system has been based on the bewildering orthography of the-relatively late-manuscripts, the most satisfactory one being done by Georg Morgenstierne (in 1942) who applied concepts of phonemics. The Avestan alphabet was never recognized as a thoroughly structured system. By including rare and variant letters, it is first demonstrated that the alphabet originally was such a system defined by consistent derivation. Then, on the assumption of an original 1:1 correspondence between the 60 signs and sounds, it is shown that Morgenstierne's phoneme system and the orthography of the manuscripts can systematically be explained as conditioned by languageinherent changes. This study offers thus a solution to the question of the state of the Avestan sound system at the time of the invention of the script and with it a glimpse at the phonetic skills of its inventors
