T]IE DESIGNATIONS of cereals occurring most frequently in the Old Assyrian texts are uttutum (gen.: uttitim, acc.: uttatam ) , se'um, arsatum,1 and GIG. As it is a well-known fact that the names of plants and particularly of Gramineae are applied in various languages and dialects to different species,2 the meaning of these Old Assyrian terms must be inferred from the Old Assyrian texts alone without regard to their signification in sources from Babylonia and other regions adjacent to Assyria. An indication as to the use made in the Rultepe material of the term uttutum can be obtained from a comparison of the texts TC 87 and ICE 13.
