The greater part of contemporary scholarship on the subject of karma in traditional India has tended to focus on cataloging the views of various schools or on the elaborate presentation of the positions of particular schools or texts. Little attention has been given to the question of the fundamental significance of the concepts of karma and past lives and their role in Indian culture and society. The present paper proposes to examine the belief in karma from the point of view of its psychological function. Rather than deal further with the technical or 95straic expositions of karma, the paper suggests that the question of karma is intimately connected with and significantly illuminated by the traditional and widely pervasive literary and popular notion of the curse
