the search for working definitions of kafr or mu'mmn ignores the fact that in the Qur'an a change in no one fault or attitude of the kafir would or indeed could have made him a mu'mmn. What he required was a combination of many strands-attitudes as well as actions-made acceptable only by the proper opening of his heart to God and the subsequent entry of God's grace and guidance. points to this kind of distortion of Qur'dn when he shows how commentators, not being able to accept the possibility of pagan prayer mentioned in the siirah, divided the sirah into two to get around the admission. Obermann, Political Theology, 151 f., in commenting on al-Usasan al-Baerl's attempt to maintain the integrity of the Qur'dn, says that . . as was to be the experience of so many protagonists of Islam after IJasan ... theological self-consistency of revelation could only be maintained by means of the dialectic gymnastics of exegesis.
