The recent comprehensive discussion of the Khorsabad wall relief by P. Albenda (Assur 3 [1983]) has prompted a reevaluation of the same relief from the viewpoint of a nautical archaeologist's perspective. Here we examine the scenes depicted on the relief by attempting to identify the flora and fauna, the geographical settings and the sculptor's use of ornamental conventions in order to demonstrate that the scenes must represent a riverine environment and not a seascape. Through a new explanation of the origin of the timber and the identification of the design of the boats, we offer here an alternative interpretation of the relief
