Partant des arguments du Cinquieme Dalai-Lama en faveur des origines indiennes des pratiques tibetaines de deposition de reliques, cet article offre une approche du developpement historique du concept de relique dans le bouddhisme indien, identifie les sources ecrites auxquelles le Grand Dalai-Lama fait allusion, et aborde certains paralleles avec l'Asie orientale. L'A. montre que la pratique de deposition de reliques est un exemple specifique d'un processus de synthese de divers aspects du bouddhisme indien, tant sur le plan de la pratique que sur celui de la theorie, processus qui ne s'arrete pas a la frontiere du Tibet
