Since many Arabic historical works have disappeared over the centuries, it is often necessary to consult available contemporary works for information about them. One such lost source is an untitled chronicle by Badr al-Din al-'Ala'i al-Misri, who lived during the first years of the Ottoman domination of Egypt, and parts of whose book are preserved only in the centenary biographical dictionary of the 10th/16th century, al-Kawdkib al-sa'ira by Najm al-Din al-Ghazzi
