DuBois's Black Reconstruction because DuBois is particularly cogent in demonstrating that access to dominant categories—in DuBois's analysis whiteness, and we argue as a supplement to whiteness, heteronormativity—delivers privilege that gives people access to power even without immediate economic reward. That psychological wage seems to be what mainstream LGBT institutions are seeking to access. DuBois is helpful in forcing us to recognize why contesting—rather than demanding inclusion in—dominant categories should be the center of justice movements (see chapters 2 and 12 of DuBois 1998 DuBois, W.E.B. 1998.
