Clifford Geertz's Moroccan work was of a piece with his overall project of understanding how cultural categories are formed and reformed in the context of such institutions as the marketplace and religious settings. His study of the Moroccan market was therefore really as much a study of religion as of economic structures. He sought to uncover the everyday morality that informs that domain and to show how that morality represents and incorporates concepts that are deeply embedded in Islamic thought. Far from romanticising or judging Moroccan social life, he sought to use his comparative work in Indonesia to highlight the distinctiveness of Moroccan local knowledge
