It is often suggested that variations in the international market for hydrocarbons contribute greatly to business‐cycle swings of oil‐importing economies. These variations would also impact oil‐exporting economies such as Algeria. This study utilises co‐integrated time series to assess the nature of the relationship between international hydrocarbon price changes and long‐run real output for Algeria. The study also examines whether an asymmetric relationship has characterised this association, specifically whether the impact of international hydrocarbon market conditions on real output are more pronounced during cyclical downturns in comparison to upturns. The study offers statistical evidence that variations in hydrocarbon market conditions are associated with variations in Algerian real output. Also found is evidence that these two variables exhibit a statistically significant asymmetric relationship (i.e. there is a greater negative impact on real output from sustained falling energy prices than there is a positive impact from sustained rising prices
