The Victorian era saw increasing British interest in Morocco, where rivalry with France remained constant and crucial. Making use of British and French archive material, the present article traces the rise of the Scottish officer, Harry Maclean, from the disgrace of forced resignation from the British army in 1876 to a position of considerable influence and authority at the Sherifian Court of Sultan Moulay Hassan a decade later. The situation is viewed chiefly through Maclean's eyes but also from the standpoint of his counterparts in the French military mission. Use is made throughout of those relevant secondary sources deemed appropriate and illuminating
