This paper explores Clifford Geertz as a teacher, fieldworker in Morocco, writer, and observer of ‘new nations.’ Beginning with a patchwork of personal reminiscences of Geertz and his influence on the author's fieldwork in Morocco four decades ago, the paper explores the creative tension in Geertz between cultural anthropology (especially the practice of fieldwork) as ‘art’ and as ‘science,’ and the relevance of anthropology (and that tension) for economic development interventions as undertaken by development agencies like the World Bank. To illustrate the latter, the author describes, in the second part of the paper, a recent World Bank intervention in Morocco in which he participated
