Electronic tango pieces often include audio samples from speeches by politicians, soccer games, sounds of urban spaces, dialogues from films, radio programs, and tangos past and present. The samples, with or without words, endow specific meaning to songs; they link the new tango with sounds, voices, and recordings of traditional tango, they give a political orientation to the message of bands working to build their public image, and they join with other resources to promote specific mechanisms of interpellated identity. In this article we analyze specific cases of the use of sampling to detect how the samples work, their significance to musicians and audiences, and also the strategies for interpellation and identity narratives that are denoted, fortified, and/or avoided through them
