The study of journalistic discourse referring to the orchestral production of the Argentine composer Carlos Guastavino permits an understanding of the difficult, fractured, controversial reception of that music. Published in Buenos Aires during the 1940s and 1950s, critics that appeared in periodicals and specialized reviews show an art music criticism formed mainly by enthusiastic composers of the avant-garde that was adverse and just in the opposite of Guastavino. This article postulates the existence of a rupture in the reception history of the composer's music that influenced the rest of his oeuvre, which conduced to the stylistic bifurcation between the Guastavino's art and popular music that is characteristic of the 1960s. That rupture, which proceeded of the avant-garde, was paradoxically based in perspectives dealing with nineteenth-century musical aesthetic and thought
